Bitter Brews

Bitter Brews is a fascinating tea-themed mod for Minecraft that not only introduces new crops and ingredients, but also allows players to brew a variety of special teas that grant unique abilities and buffs. Unlike simple food items, these teas function almost like magical potions, but with a creative, flavorful twist that fits naturally into survival gameplay. To begin your journey, you will first need to craft a mud cup from three pieces of packed mud, followed by creating a stove and a copper tea kettle. The kettle is placed directly on the stove and becomes the core “crafting station” for your teas. Once positioned, it works much like other brewing or crafting stations, requiring ingredients that you gather from your adventures.

As you explore the world, you will encounter several new ingredients that are vital for brewing the teas correctly. For example, if you wish to make a basic Black Tea, you’ll need a mud cup filled with water, sugar, hanging roots, and most importantly, a pepper. The pepper is a brand-new item introduced by this mod and is quite rare — it can be discovered in bastion chests or obtained through bartering with piglins. Once acquired, peppers can be turned into seeds, allowing players to farm them sustainably for future brewing. Interestingly, peppers also have an immediate use: eating them raw grants the player 10 seconds of fire resistance. Once all the ingredients are placed inside the tea kettle interface, the brewing process begins, producing a steaming cup of tea. Drinking Black Tea gives you the extraordinary ability to walk on lava temporarily — although it also sets you aflame, your immunity keeps you safe until the buff ends.

Another exciting option is Mango Tea, a flavorful concoction that grants immunity to fall damage for a limited duration. Mangoes themselves can be collected by shearing jungle leaves, much like how apples are obtained from oak trees. The recipe calls for one mango, an iron ingot, sugar, and a honey block. When brewed successfully and consumed, Mango Tea rewards you with the “Steel Feet” buff that lasts for 2 minutes and 30 seconds. This makes it a must-have beverage for cave explorers, mountain climbers, and Elytra users who want added protection when falling from dangerous heights.

For stealth lovers, Honey Tea is the ultimate brew. Drinking it makes your character completely invisible for 15 seconds, perfect for sneaking past hostile mobs or players. However, the trade-off is significant: you lose 6 armor points and temporarily lose the ability to heal. This risk-reward balance forces players to be strategic with its use — perfect for quick escapes or surprise infiltration. The recipe requires two honey blocks, sugar, and an oxeye daisy, making it relatively accessible compared to some other teas.

The mod even introduces Spicy Hot Cocoa, a fiery variation that combines milk, cocoa beans, sugar, and pepper. Once brewed, the drink literally appears on fire inside your cup! Consuming it grants you a short-term ability where any enemy that attacks you will catch fire. This makes it an excellent choice when battling mobs that are weak against fire or when you want to add some extra passive damage in combat.

Beyond these, Bitter Brews offers a wide selection of other unique teas with buffs such as blast resistance, health regeneration, armor protection, and even the incredible ability to see through walls with Mushroom Tea. This diversity makes the mod highly replayable, as each tea provides different tactical advantages depending on the situation. Whether you’re exploring the Nether, braving the End, or surviving in caves, Bitter Brews has a flavorful potion for every scenario.
